More About the Audio Files iTunes and Apple Music Support

What Audio formats does iTunes support? When you go for Preference settings in iTunes on Windows, and then General-Import Settings, you will see the supported encoders by iTunes are: AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3, and WAV. And, this is true for the Apple Music app for later macOS like Catalina and Big Sur. You can also check the supported formats in the Music app Preference-File-Import Settings.

Among those audio files, WAV and AIFF are uncompressed, and both come with a large bit rate. For example, AIFF is always 1411 kbps. In this way, WAV and AIFF can maintain the original quality of your CD. However, they can be huge. One more thing that needs your attention is that tags and metadata are not well supported by WAV and AIFF. You may lose that information when you transfer them from one device to another.

For AAC and MP3, they are lossy and your music will be compressed. So the file size is reasonably smaller but you can hear the loss of your music in quality.

Apple Lossless, the Apple Lossless Audio Codec, as the name suggests, is lossless and can retain the full quality of your CD or FLAC music. Importantly, it can be 50% smaller than WAV and AIFF.

FLAC to MP3 Converter for Mac OS

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) compresses the original audio data (CD and WAV etc.) by the lossless data compression algorithm, so this format is becoming increasingly popular in the world because the FLAC audio files will not lose the original audio quality while playing, and will have a much smaller file size compared to CDA and WAV formats. There are many FLAC music sources now, so people can easily find and download FLAC songs from the internet to enjoy high quality music, or rip the CDA audio tracks from audio CDs to FLAC files directly.
However, if you need to make the audio file size even smaller, or want to play your music on more devices, MP3 format would be a better choice. As the most popular audio format, MP3 is compatible with more and more software products and hardware devices.
